Whenever I want to be reminded of the flawlessness of our Rose and Ten Playlist, I go to YouTube. Why, you may ask?  Because nine times out of ten I can find a fan video to any song featured on the playlist.  Which of course means that Sage and I are not the only ones who have had Doctor Who (or more specifically, Rose and Ten) feelings about certain songs.  Seeing these videos makes me feel less alone in my madness.  It’s nice.  Yes, I may still be as “mad as a box of cats“…but I am definitely not the only one.

We’re going to start spotlighting playlist songs once a week.  Obviously, there are spoilers for anything that has aired…so if you are new to Who or plan on watching Doctor Who in the near future (Samantha, I am talking to you) you may want to avoid this post.

“The Man Who Can’t Be Moved”, The Script

“Going back to the corner, where I first saw you…”

This was actually one of the very first songs we added to the playlist on the epic day of its creation.  For me, it really brought up the image of Ten going back to see Rose one last time in “The End of Time, Part Two”.  Can we discuss that moment?  It destroys me.  He knows he is about to regenerate and he goes back to see every single one of his companions, and he saves Rose Tyler for last.  And he finds her at a time where she has yet to meet him, so she has no idea who he is.  He’s just some guy who tells her on New Year’s Eve that he thinks she is going to have a really good year.  She has no idea that he’s the love of her life.  But he DOES know.  And Tennant’s FACE in that scene.  It’s marvelous.  He knows that she is going towards him and away from him all at the same time.  I can’t.   It’s too much.

“Cause if one day you wake up and find that you’re missing me and your heart starts to wonder where on this earth I could be…thinking maybe you’ll come back here to the place that we’d meet. And you’d see me waiting for you on the corner of the street…” (This also reminds me of their epic run towards each other in “The Stolen Earth”)

“Ordinary Day”, Vanessa Carlton

I’m sorry…you’ll never be able to tell me that this song isn’t about The Doctor.  JUST LOOK AT THE LYRICS.  Is Vanessa Carlton a secret Whovian?

“Just a day, just an ordinary day, just tryin’ to get by.  Just a boy, just an ordinary boy but he was looking to the sky.  And as he asked if I would come along, I started to realize that every day he finds just what he’s looking for.  Like a shooting star he shines.  And he said, “Take my hand, live while you can.  Don’t you see your dreams lie right in the palm of your hand?  Please come with me, see what I see.  Touch the stars for time will not flee.  Time will not flee, can’t you see?”

I rest my case.

“Wintersong”, Sarah McLachlan

“And this is how I see you, in the snow on Christmas Morning.  Love and happiness surround you as you throw your arms up to the sky.  I keep this moment by and by.”

I know what you’re thinking.  “How in the WORLD is this song a Rose and Ten song, Kim?  Have you lost your mind?”  Well, yes, obviously, I have lost my mind.  But I am still right.  Wintersong conjures up the end of Tennant’s first full episode as The Doctor, “The Christmas Invasion”, where The Doctor, after defeating the bad guys and saving Christmas (as he is wont to do) asks Rose to travel with him again.  It’s such a sweet scene, and one of my favorite Rose and Ten moments.  AND since I found a video for this song, I am clearly not the only one who thought of this…

“Vanilla Twilight”, Owl City

“The silence isn’t so bad ’til I look at my hands and feel sad ’cause the spaces between my fingers are right where yours fit perfectly. But drenched in vanilla twilight I’ll sit on the front porch all night, waist-deep in thought because when I think of you I don’t feel so alone…”

This song is VERY Series Three Doctor.  The thing with series three (and the root of my issues with Martha Jones) is that The Doctor is CLEARLY in mourning for most of it.  He lost the love of his LIFE and he misses her.  It would have been a disservice to the relationship that we had invested two years in to have it any other way.  And Martha didn’t understand that, and that’s what drove me nuts about her character, especially at the beginning of the series.  I do put some of the fault with the writing…they could have made Martha a little more sympathetic about it (I mean…Donna Noble freaking got it.  But then again, Donna Noble is a flawless queen).  I can recognize that I probably should have taken a longer time between “Doomsday” and starting Series Three, as I was CLEARLY traumatized.  But there you go.  Those are my feelings on Martha.  I will be interested to see if they change when I do my series rewatch after I get the Tennant set for Christmas.

“A Whole New World”, Aladdin

“I can show you the world, shining, shimmering, splendid! Tell me, princess, now when did you last let your heart decide? I can open your eyes, take you wonder by wonder! Over, sideways and under on a magic carpet ride…a whole new world! A new fantastic point of view! No one to tell us “No” or where to go or say we’re only dreaming!”

I wish that we had saved the transcript of the day that Sage and I realized that we had left this off the playlist.  We just screamed at each other regarding our stupidity for several minutes.  Once I listened to this song as a song about The Doctor, it changed for me forever.  Cause this isn’t just a song about The Doctor and Rose.  It’s a song about the Doctor and his companions.  It’s a song about any Doctor Who FAN who dreams about the Doctor showing up and whisking them away in the TARDIS.

Sage and I aren’t the only ones who dream about that right?

Also, this video?  It’s freaking FLAWLESS.  I love how the vidder tied moments to lyrics…Rory and Eleven falling asleep on “say we’re only dreaming”…The Diamond planet on “endless Diamond Sky”…a Weeping Angel on “Don’t you dare close your eyes” (TOO SOON!!).  And don’t EVEN get me started on them putting Donna Noble scenes on “I can’t go back to where I used to be.”  SOBS. Quite possibly one of the meanest things I have ever seen.

And now, I shall go curl up in a corner with some ice cream and cry. That’s what this show does to me.
