Kirsten Wiig cries over Rose and Ten

You may have noticed that Kim and I didn’t do our usual red carpet and award show coverage for this year’s Grammys. Why? Because even people who win Grammys know that the Grammys are basically irrelevant.

But let’s just put a pin in that for now. Today, we’re going to use the Grammys for our own selfish reasons, and those reasons are OTP-related. This week’s playlist highlights are all by 2013 Grammy nominated or Grammy winning artists. And being a featured artist on Head Over Feels is the REAL prize.

“Ghosts That We Knew” – Mumford & Sons

“You saw my pain washed out in the rain
Broken glass, saw the blood run from my veins
But you saw no fault, no cracks in my heart
And you knelt beside my hope torn apart

So lead me back, turn south from that place
And close my eyes to my recent disgrace
‘Cause you know my call
And we’ll share my all
And our children come and they will hear me roar.”

If this 50th anniversary business doesn’t give us some kind of update on TenToo/Rose and their adorable babies, I QUIT. Seriously, I am out. You can keep your bow ties and your sonics and your crippling heartbreak. I’ll have escaped and started a fandom for, like, that new Ron Weasley show from the My Name is Earl guy or something.

“Gold” – Original Broadway Cast of Once

“And I love her so
I wouldn’t trade her for gold
I’m walking on moon beams
I was born with a silver spoon
And I’m gonna be me
I’m gonna be free
I’m walking on moon beams
And staring out to sea.”

We all have those friends, right? The ones who prefer their relationships to be dramatic and tragic 24/7? I’ve never understood that. If you don’t have fun together, why is it even worth it?

When Rose tells Nine that life is “better with two,” she’s right. But it’s gotta be the RIGHT two. If Doctor Who were about two miserable people who bicker all the time and then retreat to their separate rooms to write emo-y LiveJournal posts, I don’t think this fandom would even exist.

“Gold” is about the people in this world who, when you’re with them, make you the very best version of yourself. You can practically see the weight fall off of the Doctor’s shoulders as Series 1 progresses. And he never forgets it. He may not have been able to say those three little words on Bad Wolf Bay, but he comes close. “You made me better,” he says to her. And isn’t that basically the same thing?

“Ho Hey” – The Lumineers

“So show me family
All the blood that I would bleed
I don’t know where I belong
I don’t know where I went wrong
But I can write a song.”

Call them “Team TARDIS” if you like, but to me, they are the Ten Family. Watching “Journey’s End” is a tear-stained experience for lots of reasons, but this part is where I get started.

More than any other Doctor, Ten is defined by the people that he loves. I can’t get over how lucky we were to get this moment – with every person who means so much to him in the TARDIS at the same time. It was almost too much for ME to handle, so I can hardly imagine how Ten felt. He’s surrounded by all of these people who he admires so deeply – independent Martha, loyal Mickey, opinionated Donna, brave Sarah Jane, roguish Jack, and even loudmouthed Jackie. And then there’s his brilliant, compassionate Rose who literally broke down the walls between universes to get to him. And he wrote the song that brought them all together.

I mean, with what RTD was about to do to us re: Rose and Donna, it was the least he could do.

“Dark Side” – Kelly Clarkson

“Like a diamond
From black dust
It’s hard to know
What can become
If you give up
So don’t give up on me
Please remind me who I really am.”

We could absolutely make a case for this Kelly tune being a song for Nine. But when I hear it, especially these verses, “Christmas Invasion” comes to mind.

The Doctor is deep in his regeration sleep, and no amount of surrounding chaos can wake him up. That is, until Rose leans down and whispers two words in his ear: “Help me.” Regeneration FEELS LIKE DYING, as Ten himself has told us, and his body is working hard to recover. But he forces himself to come to the surface when he hears Rose’s voice.

“Someone Like You” – Adele

“I hate to turn up out of the blue, uninvited
But I couldn’t stay away, I couldn’t fight it
I had hoped you’d see my face and that you’d be reminded
That for me, it isn’t over.”

“I think the beauty of sci-fi is that anything is possible. And I think that it’s never really the end for the Doctor and Rose. Well, maybe it is, I just don’t know it. Maybe I’m the one who can’t let go.” – Billie Piper, Doctor Who Confidential

I wish I could fic, but I can’t. It would be a complete trainwreck, with weird characterization and schmaltzy dialogue. But I know people who CAN, and I request a story inspired by this song where Eleven shows up on Rose’s doorstep and it’s angsty and lovely and everyone cries. Get on that, please.
